Can Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections Treat Hair Loss and Thinning Hair?

Can Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections Treat Hair Loss and Thinning Hair

Are you worried about your thinning hair and hair loss? If there’s another brush stroke problem, then maybe it’s time for the best hair treatment.

Over 80 million adults deal with this problem. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection is a new method that uses your blood platelets, a type of cell that helps the body heal.

PRP for hair regrowth is relatively new, but it could help you look and feel more like yourself again! Artisan Aesthetics will talk about how PRP injections can help you treat this problem — and not only with your skin.

What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma is made up of two parts: plasma, which is the liquid part of blood, and platelets, which are a type of blood cell that helps the body heal in many ways.

Platelets are known for their ability to help blood clot. Still, they also contain growth factors that can divide cells and help the treated area heal or regrow tissue. Platelet-rich plasma is just blood with more platelets in it than usual.

To make platelet-rich plasma, doctors take a sample of the patient’s blood and put it in a centrifuge machine. The centrifuge spins the blood sample quickly, separating the platelets from the other parts of the blood and concentrating them in the plasma.

How Does it Function?

A blood sample from the patient is used to make platelet-rich plasma, which is then injected into the injured knee or tendon, for example.

In some situations, the doctor might use ultrasound to help guide the injection. The idea is to increase the number of specific proteins or hormones, called growth factors, in a particular area to speed up the healing process.

We still don’t fully understand how PRP injections work. But studies show that the higher concentration of growth factors in platelet-rich plasma may stimulate the process, shortening the time it takes for injuries to heal, reducing pain, and even helping hair grow.

PRP at Artisan Aesthetics

At Artisan Aesthetics, our PRP is a three-step process that uses platelet-rich plasma taken from your blood to improve the look of hyperpigmentation, acne scars, melasma, texture, tone, fine lines, and wrinkles.

Like the usual method, the blood is taken and put in a machine called a centrifuge, which spins quickly to separate the concentrated plasma. Once this highly concentrated plasma has been taken out, it is injected into your skin through direct injections or channels made with tiny needles.

This treatment is meant to help your cells grow back, making you look younger and healthier. You should do at least three sessions every 4 to 6 weeks for best results.

So, How Does It Work For The Hair?

Even though aging and genetics are often linked to hair loss in adults, they can happen anytime. Balding occurs when the tiny sacs that hold each hair to the scalp, called hair follicles, start to shrink. This makes the hair fall out.

In sports medicine, PRP has been used to help heal injuries to muscles and tendons. Research shows that giving a person with hair loss an injection of their blood’s platelets and turning on growth factors can improve the blood flow to their hair follicles and make their hair shafts thicker.

Before a PRP procedure, we will discuss what you can expect. Several peer-reviewed studies have shown that it is possible to improve the health and thickness of hair.

We will also discuss lifestyle choices that can cause hair loss, such as smoking and not eating enough vitamin D and iron, which may help hair grow.

Does PRP Help With Hair Loss?

As with any new procedure, experts still gather long-term data to determine if PRP can help hair grow and stay that way. Some people get PRP injections today, along with other treatments for hair restoration, like pills.

Still, patients who work with the board-certified team with their providers, like us here at Artisan Aesthetics, have said they are happy with the results. You can contact us or make an appointment online to discuss our PRP for hair loss.

Who’s The Best Candidate For PRP Injections?

PRP injections can help many more people than you might have thought. These plasma injections contain a lot of platelets and could help the following people:

  • Men and women alike.
  • Those with androgenic alopecia or other types of hair loss.
  • People of many different ages.
  • Those who are losing their hair.
  • Those who have lost their hair recently.
  • People whose hair is thinning or going bald

PRP injections aim to thicken, strengthen, and grow hair from still-working follicles, no matter how weak this may sound.

How Will PRP Take To Heal Your Hair Loss?

PRP is not a cure for things that make you lose your hair. Because of this, a person would need to keep getting PRP treatments over time to keep growing hair.

The same is true of drugs like topical minoxidil (Regaine) and oral finasteride, which are often used to treat androgenetic alopecia (Propecia).

Your doctor will usually tell you how often you should get PRP based on your condition and how well their first treatment worked. Once the hair loss has been stopped, the doctor may suggest you get maintenance injections every 3–6 months.

Effects on You

Some possible side effects are a headache, mild pain where your doctor gave the shot, and a sensitive scalp.

Still, there isn’t much chance that the solution will cause a reaction.

But the following side effects may happen to people who get PRP treatments for hair loss:

  • Mild pain where the needle went in
  • Scalp tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Head pain
  • Itching
  • Bleeding at the injection site for a short time
